This Small Los Angeles Home Packs a Girly Glam Punch

It's rare that a designer gets to tackle the same space twice, but Jessica McClendon of Glamour Nest had that chance to do just that in this 1,745-square-foot West Los Angeles home. "It was purchased from another client of mine who referred the new buyer to me," says McClendon. The new owner is a busy media executive, who "loved the previous space, but wanted to make it her own." it was super fun to reinterpret a space for a brand-new personality and sense of style."

For round two, McClendon focused on reinterpreting the the downstairs of the two-story space to meet a new sense of style. The decor may not be the most traditional—think bold, bright colors and a candy buffet—but it sure does pack in a girly glam punch.

Since the space was essentially a one-bedroom, McClendon had to get creative when it came to the design, considering that the new owner would be living here with her son. Establishing an open layout was key, but she also needed to create a second bedroom. We caught up with McClendon to get the whole scoop on the makeover.

What's the inspiration behind the design scheme here?

This project has a really fun story, as I got to design it twice. It was super fun to reinterpret a space for a brand-new personality and sense of style.

My new client is basically a match made in heaven for me: She is laid-back and playful, loves girly-glam style, and colorful decor. I joke that we are basically the same person, but it’s true! We instantly clicked and she trusted me.

Since the space is one big room, we wanted to preserve the overall flow but set up different living areas, creating comfortable places to hang out and entertain. The treat bar was our way of making people feel at home. We wanted people to walk in and be excited, like a kid in a candy store, and just help themselves.

Your favorite spot in the home?

That’s a tough one. I think my favorite spot is the treat bar. How could you not love it? Also, I am obsessed with vintage glassware, so this was incredibly fun to source. I scoured the internet and all of my favorite vintage joints for unique options.

We're loving the ode to Barbie. What’s the story behind that?

Barbie is the epitome of playful girly glamour, so how she ended up in the space was very organic. I knew we needed a large piece for that area but wasn’t exactly sure what it should be. One day, I was walking down Melrose with a designer friend and saw her through the window of De Re Gallery. She was perfect, and she was going on that wall. Period. The piece is by Beau Dunn.

How did you go about balancing the array of colors used within the space, without having them clash with one another?

The space is super colorful, but I approached the palette with three dominant colors in mind: blue, green, and pink. I branched out with variations in tone and saturation. For example, I used mint green to chartreuse green. With pink, I used light pink to hot pink. I also broke them up with lots of white and other materials such as acrylic and wood.

The bedroom is a dream. Can you share more about the inspiration behind the decor and how it came to fruition?

I wanted the bedroom area to flow with the overall space because the drapes remain open quite a bit, but I still wanted it to feel like its own space. This area is small, so I knew I had to make every piece count.

I love adding interest through contrasting elements, so I approached the design by playing with that idea. Think modern and vintage, industrial and glamorous, rock and roll and classical. That contrast is what allows me to get so much depth from a space that is essentially just a bed and two side tables.
